TAKEAWAY … with a bit more insight

It does not take long to identify your highest achievers. Use the “Peter Principle” to continually challenge them with greater responsibilities to maximize their potential and see how high they can rise within your organization.

There will come a time when you observe when they have reached their potential. Be cautious not to promote them beyond that or they may fail.

Get to know their personality traits.

I, for example, have ADHD. My wife says that is what makes me so creative. It has both negative and positive impacts on me.

I have written, and am in the process of writing, several other books in various genres, including children’s books, public speaking, and the story of miracles in my life. My mind does not work like most people’s and I need to be constantly doing something different in order to feel engaged.

The three core symptoms of ADHD are inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. My former boss could have used these traits to his advantage, but instead, he did not know how and could not handle me.

Some of these traits can definitely be used as an advantage. For example, I get work done very quickly and efficiently because I want to finish a particular task so I can move on to the next one.

I get bored very easily and constantly need new challenges. I could never do the same monotonous task day in and day out. People like me need to be constantly challenged with new tasks or opportunities.

Identify these types of people and constantly challenge them and you will have some of your best employees. Do not pigeonhole them. We love to tinker. I have a few inventions and helped my brother with an invention that he recently patented.

For example, one of the tasks I was challenged with at my old company was to set up a new division within the company. People like me thrive on this, and I successfully achieved this goal and brought in millions of dollars of revenue.

Lastly, being a great manager is like being a great sports coach. You cannot change people; don’t waste your time. Instead, identify their strengths and weaknesses and manage them according to their traits and skillsets.
