Chapter Thirteen

The motorcycle braked to a halt. For a moment, Alina didn’t move. During the drive, she’d closed her eyes because there had been more than a few turns that threatened to give her a heart attack. She’d closed her eyes and gripped him as tightly as she could. The result was that her body was plastered to his.

This had been her first time on a motorcycle. No doubt Midas probably enjoyed those adrenaline-inducing rides all the time. Meanwhile, Alina was pretty sure that when she got off the bike, her body would collapse in a quivering pile. She could still feel the vibrations rolling through her.

“We’re here, sweetheart,” Midas told her. “All safe and sound.”

She pushed away from him and looked around. With shaking hands, she pulled off the helmet. He hadn’t worn a helmet. That seemed crazy dangerous to her. She’d scooted back as she tried to take in the scene around her. Midas kicked down the stand and climbed from the bike. He turned back to her. Offered his hand.

He’d done that before. Behind the building, when the reporters had been surging toward them, he’d extended his hand to her. Even though she’d been afraid of the bike, she’d taken his hand because she wasn’t afraid of Midas.

There were plenty of things she did fear in this world, but he wasn’t one of them.

So, once more, she took his hand. He helped her off the bike. He’d parked it inside of a garage, and as they walked forward, he hit a button on the wall and the garage door lowered behind them.

Then they were heading through a well-lit hallway. Midas unlocked a door. Typed in a code on a security panel. Took them inside what turned out to be an enormous house.

One with a view of the mountains that was even better than the one her father had. “Where are we?” Alina asked as she looked around in confusion.

“Your new safe house.”

Her head whipped back toward him. “Say again?”

He sent her a quick smile. “Your new safe house,” he repeated. “Top-of-the-line security. Way better than what your father thinks he has. Cameras are installed all along the outside perimeter. Sensors. If someone tries to get close without us knowing, well, let’s just say they will be in for a fun surprise.” He let go of her hand. “I made arrangements earlier. Had your clothes and personal items brought over from your house. It’s not safe for you to go back there, and I think you know that. Again, your dad’s idea of security and mine are two different things. The kidnappers got past the system at your house far too easily. The same will not be said of this place.” His hands went to his hips. “No intruders will get inside here.”

Her gaze darted around the immaculately decorated house. “Who owns this place?”

“An acquaintance. I made arrangements for us to stay here for a while.”

Her head craned toward him. “You really can’t protect me at my father’s estate?”

“I told you—”

“You don’t trust him,” she finished as her stomach knotted.
