Chapter Thirteen

I crashed through the bushes, my breath steaming in front of me. ‘Got to get to Cuzak,’ I thought to myself. I’ve got to get to Brayden, got to warn him. Icy twigs tore at my parka and clawed at my face. My foot caught on a half-buried tree branch, sending me sprawling to the ground. I landed on my hands and knees. I looked up at the sky, at the full moon. I could feel the panic and adrenaline coursing through my body. How long did I have? How much time?

I’d slipped out of the meeting after claiming that I wasn’t feeling well and needed to go back to my dorm to process all of this. I wasn’t sure how much time I had left, though. I pushed myself to my feet and kept running, dodging trees. After only a few minutes, I burst through a patch of bushes, skidding on the outcrop of gravel at the shoulder of route thirteen. Again, I ended up on my hands and knees, the ice-encrusted gravel biting into my unprotected palms. I shoved myself to my feet and started sprinting again, only vaguely aware of the cuts on my hands.

My breathing was ragged by the time I got to the corner of Cuzak Street. I stopped next to the street sign, placing my hands on my knees and trying to slow my breathing. At the sound of a wolf’s howl, my blood turned to ice. It wasn’t Brayden’s howl. I knew that for a fact. The moon didn’t control him. Nothing did. It had to be Dean. The fact that the howl was far off in the distance was no comfort to me.

As soon as it died out, leaving nothing but silence, I took off down the road, running as fast as I could, not stopping until I reached Brayden’s house. My bangs fell in front of my eyes as I skidded to a stop, accidentally banging my left hip against the back bumper of Brayden’s SUV. I shook the obstruction from my face, padded up to the porch, and banged on the door.

“Brayden, it’s me, Anika!” I breathed, knowing he wouldn’t have any trouble hearing me. Even if his hearing wasn’t so sensitive, even if he was completely human, he would’ve heard my pounding. “Open up!”

The lock clicked open and Brayden was standing in front of me.

“Anika?” He questioned. “What are you doing here?”

“They know your name!” I blurted out.

A look of suspicion glazed his eyes. “What are you talking about?”

“The Hunters. They know what you are.”

His lips curled back in a silent snarl. “What did you do? You were the only one who knew for sure!”

“I didn’t sell you out. Look, Katelyn approached me a few days ago and asked me to join an organization that she’s a part of.”

“What?” His suspicious look turned to one of annoyance. “Katelyn from work?”

“I kind of told her that I’d join them.”

In an instant, Brayden’s whole face changed, modifying into something more primal.
