But the matter will rest with the Almighty One,

And every living creature will have to journey

They will walk along my path

They will sing my sorrow.

When the trench was dug and the firewood was brought, Husayn left his tent and gathered his companions once again. “This will be our final night,” Husayn said. “Prepare yourselves… These clothes you wear will be your shrouds. Tomorrow, will be our last day.”

The rest of the night was spent in quiet prayer, repentance, and supplication. As Husayn continued to lament time through his couplets of poetry, his son Ali Zayn al-Abideen was in the background listening. He was heartbroken at the sight of his father. Though Paradise did await them, the tragedy was overbearing, even for the most forbearing of men.

Zaynab also heard the lamentation of Husayn, as she tended to her ill nephew, Ali. It pained her so deeply. Though she knew like everyone else of the fate they faced, it was nevertheless a piercing spear in her heart. Husayn was her everything, and tonight would be her last with him.

Zaynab rose from Ali’s bedside and came closer to her brother. She sat beside him with tears in her eyes. She touched Husayn’s shoulder.

“Together, we lost our mother, Fatima, as children,” said Zaynab as she gazed at him. “We grew in the shadow of patience that was our father, Ali. Then he was taken from us. Yesterday, we lost our brother, Hasan. And now, you are going to join them?”

“This is my fate, dear sister,” Husayn replied.

“You are the successor of those departed and the hope of the ones who remained. If you leave, I pray that I am taken with you brother.”

“Dear Zaynab, you have to be the mountain of patience that you are,” Husayn replied with tears in his eyes. “For the women, for the children, for them all.”

Zaynab nodded silently as she wiped away her tears.

Husayn looked off and said somberly, “If a bird is freed at night, it will sleep in peace.”

Before dawn, Husayn briefly rested his head and dozed off. It was only minutes that his eyes would close, but he awoke invigorated. He leaped from his cot and went outside to find his companions and brothers gathered.

“Do you know what I just dreamt?” Husayn exclaimed as he entered their circle.

“What have you seen, master?” they replied excitedly.

“I was alone. Surrounded. Not by men, but by dogs. The dogs attacked me, growling, barking, and gnawing at my flesh. One dog, a piebald sort, was especially fierce. That one would not let.” The men’s eyes grew wide as Husayn recounted his dream. “Then I saw my grandfather, the Prophet of God, along with my father and his companions,” Husayn said. Their faces illuminated brightly. “The Prophet would come closer to me with his immaculate smile. He said to me, ‘My son, you will be the Martyr of my Progeny. The one who will kill you will be a leper among this nation.’”

The men’s faces turned somber at the thought. They were protective of their leader.
