8. Marbleizing Fabrics

Patterns can be transferred onto some fabrics using the same basic technique as that for oil marbleizing. 100% silk, cotton or taffeta are all suitable for marbleizing. These materials should be prewashed and dried before they are used. They do not have to be treated with alum. Oil colors or the textile colors used for batik and fabric printing can be used for marbleizing. Oil colors can be diluted with turpentine; textile colors should be diluted with the substance recommended on the package.

The size and colors are prepared as described in the directions for oil-color marbleizing. As soon as the pattern has been formed on the colors, the fabric is laid on top of the size and then lifted off and laid out flat on newspapers to dry. The decorated fabric is good for pillows, handbags, scarves, shirts and many other uses.
