CHAPTER 10

Crushed

Yolanna flew the holo-drone as close to the palace as possible before encountering auto security forces that would seek to destroy it. Back in the Sanctum, Daeson was standing on a mobile platform that instantaneously responded to his movements, allowing him to walk or run in any direction without actually moving. This gave the impression that his hologram image was actually moving.

“How are you going to negotiate our freedom?” Trisk asked.

Raviel, Tig, Trisk, Wescott, Boytt, and two other chieftains had gathered to watch the exchange with Lockridge. Daeson glanced toward the group and said nothing.

“You have no plan to present?” asked one of the other chiefs.

“Ell Yon has a plan…I just don’t know what it is yet,” Daeson replied. He looked at Yolanna and nodded.

A fraction of a second later, Daeson was approaching the outer court of the palace. Sentries immediately attempted to accost him. Once they realized he was a hologram, weapons focused on the holo-drone.

“I wish to speak to Chancellor Lockridge,” Daeson demanded.

“Scan the drone,” ordered the captain of the sentries.

“No weapons detected,” came the reply.

He sneered at Daeson. “If that thing moves, blast it.”

The captain activated his com. After a short exchange with his superior, the response came. “Yes, sir,” the captain acknowledged before clicking off his com link and turning back to Daeson’s holo-image. “Follow me,” he directed.

After more scans of the holo-drone, Daeson entered the royal court. Four guards had weapons continually trained on the holo-drone as Daeson approached. Within Linden’s court stood administrators and various officials, including three councilmen.

“I see your cowardice has not allowed you to face me in person.” Linden rose from his throne and descended the steps to stare Daeson in the eyes. He walked around the hologram and then returned to his seat. Xandra was dutifully standing beside him, her countenance fierce.

“I’m offended that you ever bore the name Lockridge,” Linden sneered.

“I am and always will be Daeson Starlore. I come in the name of the Immortal Sovereign Ell Yon.”

Linden reached for Xandra’s hand, bringing it close to his lips, conveniently showing the two jeweled rings situated on her fingers that indicated her position as his co-heiress.

“Xandra, look at what has become of our former friend.” Linden kissed the back of her hand. “The one we trusted. The one who spurned both of us and all of Jypton. The traitor, the rebel, the betrayer, and now the believer in fairy tales.” Linden released her hand, leaned forward, and made a fist. “My father gave you everything, and you spit on him—you murdered him. There is no greater crime a man can commit, and for this you will pay!”

Xandra stepped forward and lifted her chin. “You disgust me,” she added, her eyes filled with loathing contempt.

“I have a message for you,” Daeson said, looking directly at Linden. “You will release all Rayleans that you have enslaved and grant them their freedom.”

Linden’s scowl slowly transformed to a smile. Then he began to laugh. Xandra and the councilmen joined him until everyone in the court was laughing.
