CHAPTER 35

Hendrick stopped in his tracks—the gunfire markedly different from before. The shots tightly spaced, but clearly methodical. Unmistakably a different caliber: 7.62 millimeter. Definitely not panic fire. Now the smoke made sense. Farrington had thermal rifle scopes at his disposal, one of them possibly aimed at his forehead right now. Then again, why would Farrington drag out the inevitable? If the roles were reversed, Hendrick would have already drilled a hole through Farrington’s head. Maybe only one member of the team survived the drone onslaught. They needed to move quickly.

“Let’s go,” he said, urging his team forward, before triggering his radio. “WHISKEY. Report.”

“All four are down hard. Head or neck shots,” said Bekker. “The shooter is using a thermal scope. That’s the only explanation. I’m just lying flat for now. I might try to crawl in the original breach room.”

“Just stay put. We’ll take care of this,” said Hendrick, reaching a hallway that crisscrossed the foyer hallway.

“Shit,” said Bekker.

“What?”

“A fucking frag grenade just—”

A sharp explosion shook the house, cutting off Bekker’s transmission.

“Bekker?”

No response. Two could play at that game. He halted the team for a moment, activating his radio.

“Frag grenades. Each of you hand one forward. Joubert. Stuff them in my dump pouch,” said Hendrick, removing his grenade from a pouch on his vest. “We’re going in full fucking throttle.”

The house had gone deathly silent again. He listened intently for any signs of movement in the back of the house, as Joubert, number two in the team’s tactical stack, quietly slipped all three fragmentation grenades into his pouch. As the mercenary added the third, he gently patted Hendrick on the shoulder. Time to scatter the cockroaches. He let his rifle hang by its sling and pulled the pin on the first grenade before rolling it up the hallway toward the back of the house.

“Grenade out,” he whispered over the radio, and the entire team of four dropped into prone positions, hugging the wall.
