By the end of supper, Joel had filled Derek in on the rules of euchre. Listening to her cousin’s convoluted explanation, Raina exchanged excited glances with Haylee. They were both certain they were going to win. Haylee wasn’t quite as competitive as the Quinns were, but she was learning quickly to join their ways.

After they had finished, the two women quickly loaded the dishwasher, while Joel went over a little bit more about how to play and the two men developed a strategy. Raina knew she and Haylee wouldn’t need one. Joel had never been good at euchre, and she was sure something miraculous hadn’t happened since the last time they’d played.

The four of them gathered around the table, the three animals still piled together in the corner, seeming to be content.

When Derek bid a lone hand with the first deal and Raina looked down to see the right bower in her hand, she knew that there was no way Joel had explained anything well. They were going to kick their butts, and she was going to dance with glee. Maybe she’d even dance a little jig to commemorate St. Patrick’s Day.

“Yeah, I just wanted to really explain the game to you. Joel is horrible at euchre and always has been. He’ll still be the lowest man on the totem pole.” She gave a brief explanation of the game, explaining the bowers in a way that Joel had neglected or not understood himself.

By the time she was finished, Derek was nodding. “I get it now. Why did you let him teach me? I was so confused!”

“I know. He’s the worst. Now, let’s go wipe the floor with them.”

Derek shook his head. “You kind of scare me with your competitiveness.”

“Good. That’s how it should be.” She walked back toward the door, noting that Daisy was waiting to go back in. “All right, Daisy is happy, and so am I. Deal, Joel.”

It only took two hands for Joel to realize her reason for going outside. “You guys talked strategy!”

Raina shook her head. “We didn’t have to. I just explained the game to him in a way that made sense, and that was all he needed.”

“I explained it well!”

Even Haylee shook her head. “You’re a wonderful veterinarian, and I’m very excited to marry you. But you cannot explain euchre to save your life.”

By the end of the evening, Raina and whoever partnered her had won every single game. There
