Shamrock V and Enterprise eventually met off Rhode Island later that year. The two yachts had similar hull profiles but differed significantly in rig. But Shamrock V was under-winched and she had little chance against Enterprise’s advantages of performing well to windward, and her innovative boom and lighter rigging. Ironically there was only one rigging failure – a parted halyard cost Shamrock V the third race. In the final deciding race, just before the finish, Vanderbilt gave Starling Burgess the honour of steering Enterprise to victory. Although Enterprise had won all her races crushingly, and thus retained the Cup, it had been at enormous expense. The price of building her, with all her innovations, was estimated then to have been some £150,000 (some four times the cost of Shamrock V). It would not be until 1948, when an extrusion process was developed to make aluminium masts, that alloy masts would at last become affordable for less exotic yachts.

Although Enterprise was broken up soon after her epic 1930 victory, Shamrock V is afloat and can be chartered, www.rnryachts.com; see also www.jclassyachts.com.
