CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

KAJA

"Your hair looks terrible," Valerie greets me as she sits by the fire next to Lykano.

Reflexively, I reach into my curls and try to smooth them out. But why do I react like this? Actually, Valerie's opinion of my hairstyle should be indifferent to me. Snappily I say: "Thanks, good morning to you too."

"Don't be offended," she replies. She looks as striking as yesterday. Her lips are painted in a dark red, highlighting her pale face and fine features. Her long hair falls open to her waist.

"I'm not," I answer briefly.

"We're friends now. I can help you untangle your hair later."

Did she really say friends? No idea if she ever had a friend. But that's not how things work here. "I'm not your friend. I am your captive."

Lykano looks up and straight into my face. "You are free to move here. Just remember, we are always faster than you. I can still hear every breath you take up to three kilometers away, and I can smell you for miles. Yes, you are not at liberty, that's true. But we're not going to chain you up."

I swallow hard against the rising anger inside and stare back proudly. "How gracious of you. But what's the use of walking around here?"

"You could roam the forests hand in hand with me. I'd be happy to show you a quiet spot or two here. I even know a particularly cozy little place..." says Jeremiah, looking at me amusedly.

"Jer, leave her alone with your date stuff. You have to give her time to settle in here. The rest will come on its own," Valerie interrupts. "You can't expect it to be love at first sight, just like with Connor and me."

"You've known each other for a long time, right? I mean before... uh... before the transformation," I ask, noticing how hard it is for me to talk about the transformation. Because once you say something, you acknowledge that it is the truth.

"We've known each other since seventh grade," says Val and puts her arm around the broad shoulders of her boyfriend. "He's the first for me and he will always be the only one."

"You can bet your life on that. If anyone approaches you, I'll kill him with my bare hands."

"Good thing it's just the two of us here, and the other packs live in distant territories," says Valerie and then places her lips on Connor’s. He instantly opens his mouth for her, and their tongues meet. Their vigorous kissing is so repulsive that I have to look away.

Jeremiah's face twists into a grin. "Can't wait until we're that far."

"Pfff," I just say and shrug my shoulders. "Is there anything to eat?" I ask, as a distraction.

Just then, Valerie climbs onto Lykano's lap. He places his hands on her buttocks and pulls her closer to him. Val moves her hips unmistakably on purpose. They're not going to do it right here in front of our eyes, are they?

"Get to your bed!" says Jeremiah. "It’s disgusting to watch you.
