Chapter 21

Weber didn't have to go far to find Harvey Nichols. He had just parked his Explorer at the curb on Juniper Lane, and even before he got out of the vehicle, the man was knocking on his window. He stepped back far enough for the sheriff to get out, and then demanded, “You need to move this car right now! You're parked in front of my house. How long are all these police cars going to be out here, anyhow?”

“It's a public street, Harvey. I'll park where I want to park,” Weber said.

“Not in front of my house, you won’t.”

“Yeah, I will,” Weber told him. “If you don’t like it, call a cop. What is your problem anyway?”

“My problem is I don't want anybody parking in front of my house, and I don't want all of these police cars up and down the street.”

“You have a driveway to park in, so nobody is bothering you and nobody's blocking your driveway,” Weber told him. “As far as these official vehicles being here, you do realize that a crime was committed, right?”

“That's not my concern. You all are destroying the peace and quiet of this neighborhood with all this activity going on.”

“The only person I see disturbing the peace and quiet is you, Harvey,” Weber said. “How about you go back inside your house and I'll be over to talk to you in a little bit?”

“You can't order me around like that, Sheriff. I've got my rights.”

“Yes, sir, you do,” Weber told him. “So if you want to stand here in the middle of the street making an ass out of yourself, I guess that's your right, Harvey. Be my guest.”

Weber walked up to the Wagner house and signed the log sheet of anybody entering and leaving. Coop and Chad were standing in the living room watching as Dolan dusted every surface for fingerprints.”

“What's going on, guys? Anything new?”

“Not much,” Chad told him. “The only thing that might be a little bit significant, and it could be a stretch, is that we found three coffee cups and three small plates with what looks like the residue of chocolate cake on them, along with three forks in the dishwasher.”

“Which raises the possibility that there was somebody here before the couple was killed,” Weber said.

“That's what I was thinking,” Chad replied. “If you look around the kitchen, it's spotless, Jimmy. The only dirty dishes were what I just told you about in the dishwasher. Everything else is clean and put away. The whole house is clean. The only place that isn't is upstairs in the master bedroom and bathroom, where the bodies were found.”

“Did you and Parks find anything that could be a connection between that Feller guy and what happened here?”

“Nothing so far,” Coop,” Weber said shaking his head. “And everything I can find out about the victims is that they got along with everybody and didn't have an enemy in the world.”

“We had deputies canvas everybody up and down the street,” Coop said.
