MEETINGS

Once Maestro was gone, he threw back the covers and retrieved his discarded clothes.

"Everything will be all right," Cherry said, wrapping around him and kissing him softly. "We'll figure something out." He stared intently into Kobalt's eyes, clearly trying to convey something he couldn't risk saying aloud.

Kobalt sighed and kissed him again, then drew back. "One way or another, I suppose. Come on."

He left the relative safety of the bedroom, Cherry close behind him, and swept the front room—and nearly drew up short as he spied the only man in the room who could possibly be a fighter, though unlike Kobalt, he wasn't dressed for it yet, but still wore street clothes.

He was small, smaller than was typical for fighters at this level. That wasn't even the strangest thing about him, though. No, that was a toss-up between the fact he was from Mars like Kobalt—though the Nippon colony, rather than the Moscow colony—and the fact he was rehab. He had it written all over him, from his stance, his hard eyes, the way he swept the room just like Kobalt. Rehabbers just knew each other.

Two former Martian rehabbers, going head to head in an exhibition match that was really a death match.

He was short, trim, though there was no hiding the obvious muscle even in all the layers he wore. His hair was ink black and his eyes the most delicate pale gray Kobalt had ever seen. Like the color of the fog that rolled over Rehab sometimes, or through the colony when something fritzed in the climate control system. He was also pretty, with sharp, elegant features and hair that fell around his head in wispy strands. Something about him was familiar, but damned if Kobalt could say why. He definitely hadn't been at Kobalt's rehab—that he would definitely remember.

"Guess we all really do like to fight, huh?" the man said with an easy grin.

"Something like that," Kobalt replied. "I'm Kobalt. What rehab were you at?"

"Name's Beta. I was at 5118208, Sector 9. You?"

Kobalt whistled. Sector 9 was for the most dangerous. He'd never worked up that high, had never wanted the stress of it. "1245814, Sector 5." Low-threat, but highly dangerous criminals, like purges. Not likely to hurt you, but they could take down the whole system if they got access to the right things.

"Nice. I've heard a lot of good things about that one. You never let a Draconis convicted of murder escape, for example." He winked, and something jolted through Kobalt.

Because suddenly he knew why Beta seemed familiar. His name wasn't Beta. It was Cyan. He'd gone missing during a required break, hunting for his friend who'd gone missing a year previous after being kidnapped by the escaped Draconis. It had been all over the news and especially all over rehabs. Two guards missing, both breaking the law, one of them a rare magics-capable human. The other had proven to be related to Lower Chancellor Alexander, who was wanted for a long list of crimes and had gone missing years ago, along with High Chancellor Kavalerov.
