CHAPTER NINETEEN

"I knew it." Gene said, sneering at David who still aimed the missing 1911 at his head. "I knew you were no good from the minute I saw you, and let me tell you something, bub. You're no Lost Boy and you definitely don't deserve a cool coat like that. You're more like the two-bit hoodlum Kiefer played in Stand By M---ugh!"

David struck Gene across the face with the gun and followed that with a blow to the ribs dropping him to a knee.

"David, stop!" Bev cried out from high above them still in the exhaust pipe.

David saw her bringing her weapon up and he wagged a finger, pointing his gun at Gene's head. "You don't want to be trying that, Bev. I know you're a fairly decent shot, but what are the odds I miss from a foot away? Better yet." He knocked Gene's Stetson from his head and yanked him to his feet by his hair. David got behind Gene holding his gun against his prisoner's cheek.

"Still think you might hit me?"

Bev chewed her lip considering the odds, but kept her aim steady. "Go ahead then, shoot him and see what happens!"

Gene chuckled and wheezed, "Ooh, you've pissed her off now."

"Shut up!" David yanked on his hair in an effort to shut him up. Now it was his turn to consider the odds and he didn't like them. A banging at the door beside them gave him inspiration. He grinned and opened the door. "Maybe this'll help."

Dozens of Raiders crowded through the door, guns raised and cheering. The lights came on illuminating the large room from top to bottom.

David called out to them. "Watch out up top. I want them down here, now!"

Several in the group obeyed, raising their attention and weapons upward, and locating who David meant.

"Got 'em!" Said one.

"Oh, we'll get her down." Laughed another.

"No shooting!" David warned. He maintained hiding behind Gene, just in case, but still directed traffic. "Get the scaffolding under the pipe before it breaks the rest of the way." He stared up to Bev and Roxy. "All right ladies, there's no chance of getting away so just stay still. My boys here will fill that pipe with holes if you even move out of sight! Not to mention what'll happen to your hero, here."

David pressed the gun harder against Gene's cheek for emphasis.

Gene peered upward at Bev. She still watched through her scope and he prayed she knew what he meant by shaking his head and mouthing, "Get out of here! Warn the others!"

She lowered her rifle slowly, gradually holding it out with one hand while the other raised in surrender. She mouthed back to Gene, "I'm sorry," and allowed her gun to fall.

Gene watched it tumble and bounce off a crate before clattering across the concrete floor. A raider rushed to pick it up before another could and they argued over who saw it first.

Gene gazed back to Bev, confused and wanting to ask why. Then he saw why.

The scaffolding wheels made a whining, screeching sound as the Raiders forced it under the pipe.
