6.2.1.4 Waist points – redirecting pressure

These points are located at the high point of the hipbone, right where you might rest your hands while standing impatiently. This area lies along the course of the Belt channel, which circles the waist and helps to hold Baby in during pregnancy. Pressing slowly and deeply into these points can help the pelvic floor to release during labor. I think of it particularly for strong woman syndrome, and for labors that have started with membrane rupture and/or induction before Mom’s whole body was fully ready.

The method works best from behind, with Mom seated or standing. First find the high point on both sides, then gently press in with index and third finger together, slowly increasing pressure inward. As you press, Mom should feel a growing heaviness in the pelvic floor – a perfect opportunity for Belly Breathing, with additional instructions to feel as though the pelvic floor is inflating like a balloon. The pressure is considerable, and on a pregnant person your fingers will go quite deep, but if you proceed slowly there will be no discomfort, only a deep, spreading sensation as the pelvic floor softens.
