CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Jake spent the rest of his convalescence playing the events of the past two days over and over in his mind. He thought back from Sheila’s first visit to his apartment to his choice to storm the Trident hideout and questioned every one of his decisions.

He didn’t like the conclusions he came to.

It was utterly wrong of him to kiss Sheila. That was a completely foolish breach of professionalism on his part.

She had started it, it was true. She had made her intentions very clear when she visited him. She had made her desires obvious, and he had only given her what she had most definitely wanted.

But he should have been stronger than that. He should have been strong enough to refuse her advances. He was a Secret Service agent. He didn’t get to have normal human weaknesses. He could whine all day long about the fact that he was only a man, and she had pursued him and not the other way around, but at the end of the day, it didn’t matter. He was the one who was supposed to be better than other people. He had to be. His job demanded it.

As far as the reconnaissance, he still defended his decision. The three terrorists wouldn’t have been there if he waited for a Rapid Response Team. He wouldn’t have the information he had now if he hadn’t gone when he did.

But to storm the building alone? That wasn’t just against Secret Service Protocol. That was against the protocol of every law enforcement and military organization in the United States, not to mention common sense.

He knew that, so why did he rush them? Why did he make a rookie mistake and assault an enemy stronghold without backup? If he told his Marine self that he had done this, then Staff Sergeant Jake Mercer would berate him for being a fool, just as Art had.

Well, he didn’t need to worry about making bad calls anymore. Art had ensured that he could make no calls anymore.

That glum thought stuck with him as he made his way home after being released from the hospital. When he arrived home, he checked his messages. The only message was from Jess. It was an animated image of a penguin holding a heart that said GET WELL SOON!

Nothing from Art and nothing from Sheila.

He sat on the couch for a while, not watching a daytime talk show that seemed unusually concerned with the fashion choices of a singer who had just turned old enough to drink legally. When sitting alone at home became too much, he showered and dressed, then headed for Max's bar. He had no idea how his mentor and friend would react to news of what happened, but if anyone could sympathize with his situation, Max could.

He reached the bar just after the lunch rush. Once more, the bar was empty save for Jake, Max, his niece and a few older patrons. Max greeted him with a smile when he came in, but his smile vanished when he saw Jake’s expression.
