All Positive Things

“Come with me to my parents’ next weekend.”

“What?” Violet asked the next morning. She’d slept longer and harder than she normally did and she figured the wine played a part in that along with the fabulous night of sex she’d shared with Trace.

When she finally opened her eyes in the morning it was to the smell of coffee. She’d thrown the covers back and made her way downstairs to see Trace sitting at the table with his laptop open and a cup of coffee next to him while deep in his work.

So much for thinking he was going to have breakfast made for her and she’d started to laugh and he jumped.

That was over an hour ago.

“You heard me,” he said. “I’m going home on Saturday to spend the weekend with my family for the holiday. Come with me. You said you don’t have plans. I don’t want to leave you alone.”

“I’ve been alone for holidays before. It’s not a big deal.”

He frowned and dug into the omelet she’d put in front of him. He’d continued to work while she’d showered and gotten dressed, then came down and made breakfast for them both. He had given her a cup of coffee though when she returned to the kitchen.

“It is for me. My mother and grandmother would never let me live it down,” he said.

“Do they know about me?” she asked. This was the first she was hearing this.

“I might have mentioned your name when I talked to my mother once.”

“Oh,” she said. “I guess you meant it when you said you were taking it as it came.”

He frowned. “I told you that. You didn’t believe me?”

“I wanted to,” she said.

“Then do it. Seriously. I heard you turn everyone’s offer down last night. I have to go home. If I stay and things do work out with us like I hope, my mother will hold it against you that you kept me back. You don’t want to get off on that bad foot, do you?”

“Wow. Talk about guilt in a sneaky way.”

She wasn’t sure how she felt about the words he’d just said.

That he was thinking more about the future.

He wanted things to work out.

He didn’t want his mother to think ill of her.

All positive things.

“Did it work?” he asked.

“No,” she said.

His shoulders dropped. “I’ve got the week to convince you to go with me.”

“Let me ask. Why do you want me to? Not just because you don’t want me home alone. You don’t know me well enough. Maybe I like being alone.”

“I think you tell yourself you like it, but we know the truth. But that didn’t answer your question. I want you to go because I want to be with you and I can’t be in both places at once.”

“Your family comes first?” she asked. Maybe there was more to his ex leaving him than what he let on. Could be he was a Mama’s boy.

“Not like you think,” he said. “I missed a lot of holidays. I had no choice.
