Approaching St. Thomas, Unites States Virgin Islands

Kelton and Haley entered the ship's massive master suite, laughing quietly and holding hands. As soon as they closed the door, they let go, both of them looking relieved. Axe stepped out of the master bathroom with a raised eyebrow. “How's the act coming?” he asked with a smile.

“It's exhausting!” Kelton said with a sigh. He walked over and flopped onto his enormous bed of two king-size mattresses pushed together.

Haley put her fists on her hips. “Kelton, darling, how dare you!” she said with a laugh.

“Sorry, Haley, nothing against you, but my business right now is swirling down the toilet, and I’m out here on the ocean playing superspy,” he said. “Besides, I never thought we’d make it this far. But you reeled Conroy in. I hope you know what you’re doing.”

Haley, chastened, said, “Sorry, Kelton. I know this is a sacrifice for you. How's the attack on your company? Are you able to keep in touch and manage it from here?”

Alex had seen Kelton’s lavish office. With modern communications, Kelton was likely exaggerating his inability to stay in touch.

“Truth be told, there's very little I can do here or there. But I would just rather be back in my office, surrounded by my minions, so I could have people to yell at,” he said, half-joking.

Alex chimed in, “As soon as the chopper returns, you go back to San Juan, and from there, you can fly straight back to New York.”

“I thought you needed me on the island.”

“From what I saw of Conway last night, I’m even more inclined to believe in Haley’s hunch. You might as well go back. It could make things easier for Haley and me.” They hadn’t told Kelton much, just that they needed him so they could get close to Conroy, but not why or what they suspected.

“What about the cybersecurity demo? I could use all the help I can get, and besides, if his software is as good as I'm hearing, I might want to invest in his company. Get in on the ground floor. Assuming I have any money left after this week,” he sighed.

His companies were continuously hit by effective cyber attacks. Gossipy rumors had spread like wildfire throughout the tabloids, ranging from obvious falsehoods to stories that rang true to the casual reader. Outlandish behaviors, philandering, drunken sex parties, drug use, and other excesses. All had contributed to a rapid decline in his company's stock price, as well as many large, important clients canceling contracts for every one of the many businesses in his empire.

Already, Kelton had lost $26 billion of his net worth, according to a story Axe had read that morning as they flew by helicopter to the ship, already in route to St. Thomas.

“Kelton, please,” Haley said as she walked to the bed and sat down on the edge next to his sprawled body. “Trust us. My prediction is that Stefan wants you more than you need him. In fact, I think it's likely that if you go to the island, he won’t let you leave.
