Dawn moves in the eastern sky. A train ticks

over the bridge, the first bus idles from its stall,

a wheeze of cranes on all-night building sites,

the two blue notes of a police car.

First sun lights the fuse of three rivers,

touches the Old Library, the Market roof,

St John’s Church, slides down Castle Street,

touches lions, lioness, lynx, bear,

seal, wolf, apes, two racoons,

seventeen animals sprawled in stone

a hundred years on the Castle wall

where the river slides under the bridge.
