CHAPTER 7

When I opened my eyes the next morning they felt swollen and tight. I had done some crying before falling asleep but they felt as if they were itchy and sore. I fumbled my way to the bathroom mirror, my vision blurred and distorted, but what I saw there caused a shrill scream to escape my lips.

My eyes were not just red and puffy, they were completely swollen and half glued together. It was definitely conjunctivitis. Bad.

‘Shit, shit shit!’ I ran the hot water and tried to sooth them with a flannel, but they were only slightly better. I needed a doctor. Immediately. The hastily thrown together hens was tonight.

I put on my sunglasses and went into the house to find Emma. She was at the blurred kitchen table eating something I couldn’t quite make out.

‘Emma, don’t freak out, but…’

She had already freaked out. She jumped up from the table and dropped her spoon as soon as I said the words. ‘What is it? Shit, no, don’t tell me.’

I took off my glasses and let her see for herself. She gasped, made a face of disgust and seemed to take a step backward. ‘Shit, Bree, What the hell?’

‘I know. It’s horrible, but can we get to a doctor? If I can get some antibiotics and cream, hopefully it won’t get any worse.’

Emma made a disgusted face again. She was almost wincing. ‘Worse? could it really get worse?’

‘It will if I don’t get to a doctor!’ I insisted.

She looked out the window. ‘Ben’s gone for the day, so I haven’t got a car here.’

Great. No car, disgusting conjunctivitis and a hen’s party in 10 hours.

Emma was tapping away at her phone. At least that’s what it looked like through my mostly sealed shut eyes.

‘Excellent!’ she exclaimed. ‘Will is on his way, so go get ready. I’m going to get dressed. He’ll be here in 10.’

She was gone before I could protest, but surely the entire block heard my groan. Seeing Will was the absolute last thing I needed in this moment. I was beginning to wonder if Emma was right about the wedding curse.

I carefully made my way back to my room and changed into some comfortable exercise wear and sneakers. If I needed to abandon the car ride to get away from Will, I wanted to be comfortable on my very long walk.

When I heard the car horn, I went back inside and found Emma. She was already waiting at the door and Will was parked in the driveway in his ridiculous pink sports car. I muttered to myself and followed her out.

‘You can take the front seat,’ Emma offered.

I said thanks, but I didn’t mean it. I’d rather have sat quietly in the back and pretended I was in an Uber.

Will looked over his sunglasses at me. ‘Sooo, let me see the damage,’ Will said.

I huffed. ‘Just drive the car, Will. Please. I’m not showing you.’

Will crossed his arms. ‘Show me first and then I’ll drive,’ he teased.

I pulled down my glasses and pushed my head toward him making him pull back away from me.
